Mackie passed away on September 14 in Palm Springs, California, following a battle with pneumonia, according to statements released by his representative and official social media accounts.

After studying illustration at Pasadena City College and costume design at the Chouinard Art Institute, he broke into Hollywood as a sketch artist for legend Edith Head and French couturier Jean Louis—where he famously drew the original sketch for Marilyn Monroe's sheer, crystal-encrusted gown worn for President John F. Kennedy's 1962 birthday celebration.
